As the year begins to wind down, several fashion weeks have held and still holding all over the world. Likewise, designers are showcasing their crafts at these events, making the events worth the watch for us viewers and bloggers. Among these fantastic designers are the selected few that have not only put their brand in the limelight this year but have also remained consistent ensuring that their brands stay in the light.
As you know, it will be an arduous task to talk about designers from every country in the world, haha!. Due to this, I’ve decided to share with us a synopsis of the best brands in five countries which are; Spain, London, India, Nigeria, and The United States. If you are a fashion freak, then you might be familiar with these designers already. But for someone with no or little knowledge of the fashion world, I hope that after reading this, your understanding of the fashion world would have increased. “WINKS”
So, let’s get right to it!
Cristóbal Balenciaga: The Balenciaga brand is one that has continuously left our “jaws dropping.” Popularly known for its big-sized shoes, the brand also has other designs, including bags that are second to none. When you see a shoe with a different color mix, you know that it’s a Balenciaga! This French Luxury Fashion House Brand started in 1895 with clients like Marquesa de Casa Torres, whose reputation and generosity helped build the brand further.
According to The Met, “Balenciaga favored fluid lines that allowed him to alter the way clothing related to a woman’s body. Waistlines were dropped, then raised, independent of the wearer’s natural waistline.” Before “the architect of haute couture” (Balenciaga) died in 1972, he set a standard of what we call “shaping fashion” that has kept the brand going ever since. In 2015, Demna Gvasalia became the Creative Director of the brand, and he has since then been giving us street vibe designs. Although the style of Demna is different from that of Balenciaga, one thing that resonates between these great minds is their approach to creating designs that can make anybody look breathtaking.
Alexander McQueen: What other brands will I continue with? None other than the great Alexander McQueen that just won CFDA’s 2019 International Designer of the Year Award. Alexander McQueen founded the fashion company also known as Alexander McQueen. McQueen started his British Luxury Fashion brand in the year 1992, and ever since then, the brand has risen against all the odds. Before McQueen died from suicide in 2010, he worked as the Chief Designer for Givenchy for five years. Not only that, he earned the “British Fashion Councilʼs British Designer of the Year” award four times.
When he died, Sarah Burton took over as the Creative Director of the brand, and as a trailblazer that she is, she didn’t let the brand down; she design took over as the Creative Director of the brand, and as a trailblazer that she is, she didn’t let the brand down; she designed the wedding dress for Her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Cambridge, Catherine Middleton. Even though the brain behind the brand is dead, the brand still lives on in all its glory. I cannot end it here without giving you one of Alexander’s Quotes.ed the wedding dress for Her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Cambridge, Catherine Middleton. Even though the brain behind the brand is dead, the brand still lives on in all its glory. I cannot end it here without giving you one of Alexander’s Quotes.“I work with people I admire and respect. It’s never because of who they are.” ~Alexander McQueenI guess this is why the brand is still blooming because Sarah Burton is keeping the flag of the brand at a high altitude.
Manish Malhotra: If there is anything to notice in India, it is their colorful fashion sense. It feels like the country has made a vow with colors.
Haha! The founder, Manish, started as a model until his love for fashion drew him to start something new in India; costume design and styling. Started in 1990 as a Bollywood costume designer, Manish has featured as the designer in series of Indian movies. In 2017 alone, he designed actors in six different films. As growth is needed to climb higher, Manish decided to “carve his niche as an Indian luxury designer” in 2018. After taking a look at his latest apparel, I can’t but be amazed.
Mai Atafo:Atafo is a Nigerian Luxury Brand with a unique sense of fashion compared to most fashion brands in the country. Atafo stands out with his Bespoke Men’s suits and Wedding dresses. His brand is a force to reckon with! The brand is recognized for its clean cuts and fit while maintaining concise attention to detail.
“With several features in shows across the globe including the J Spring Fashion Show Paris, Glitz African Fashion Week Ghana, Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Africa, Arise Magazine Fashion Week, and Lagos Fashion and Design Week both in Lagos to mention a few.” In the just concluded Lagos Fashion Week, 2019, the Atafo brand stood out during their fashion walk. Not only did the models gloriously walked the stage, but they were also ushered in & out by angelic voices on one side of the stage. This extra touch shows the thoughtful and unique nature of the man behind the brand (Ohmai Atafo) is putting into his business. The Atafo brand is here to stay if you ask me.
Ralph Lauren: Who would have thought that this brand started with tie-making? Well, that was precisely the case with Ralph Lauren, a United States brand that has grown for over 50 years and counting. From Tie-making, the brand grew into producing sportswear, menswear, and womenswear. Today, the brand not only provides apparel but other materials like fragrances, accessories, and home décor, which has made it the “world’s most widely recognized families of consumer brands.”
In 2018 alone, Ralph won six different awards from the U.S.A and in the U.K. Among these awards is the “Member’s salute award” given to him by CFDA in June 2018. Although the brand is finding it hard to appeal to millennials due to its traditional designs, I don’t see the brand going out of business anytime soon.
As I begin to conclude, one thing I have noticed in the fashion industry is that European countries are taking the lead. Fashion designers from other continents, including Africa, are now stepping up, and they are doing great. Also, the Fashion Industry seems to be male-dominated, but hey, so far they make unique, and quality designs, so, I cannot be bothered.
